11/3Oahu

11/3 Arr Honolulu the flight was full, 5hrs. staying 2 nights at Royal Grove Hotel 2 blocks from Waikiki Beach. The first thing I noticed was all of these cheap touristy stores called ABC. "All Blocks Covered" The busdriver joked. It was true. We met up with our friend Brendan from Girdwood and tried surfing, it was hard to get up. Then we drove to the North Shore and went in on a small day (6 ft waves) with a boogie board and fins.  I was out past the line up and came back in unscathed. Apparently I didnt learn my lesson and quickly learned it.  I set up to ride a wave and lost the board and I needed my friend to bring it out to me. I was schooled good on that one. Went to animal kenals to get Brendan's dog Mauka (hawai'an for mountain). 30 day quarantine for all dogs. Started eating Papaya and bannanas for breakfast. Too bad Mangos were out of season. "Aieee, Lets get out of the city!"

11/5Kaua'iYeay!

Hit BACK when done. We got an Alamo Blazer in Lihue, went to Big Save, then to the County and State parks offices (ask where at airport) to get our permits for $3-5/day each. There's a really nice free map at the state parks office.
We camped at some great camp sites. I recomend seeing (not camping at) them all.

THESE ARE OUR FAVORITE CAMP SITES ON KAUA'I

Salt Pond 11/5-11/8 - Nice place very sunny lots of facilities.
Anihola 11/8-11/10 - Nice but a little scarry. Locals may not be so friendly here.
Anini 11/10-11/12  - Very nice place, Bathrooms dedicated from Sylvester Stallone.
Polihale 11/12-11/15 - Nice place, very sunny, very hot, long dirt road.
Larsen's Beach - Not a campsite but a lovely secret beach!
NaPali Coast hike - Wow! Wow! Wow!
If I lived here, which I may. I would live in Hanalei on the north coast. It has similarities to my home town near the mountains and lots of fun loving people and resturaunts. Hanalei neighbors Princeville, the most expensive real estate on the north shore. We circled the island and camped along the way. Setting up camp and scouting out ahead in the day. Nights were most excellent with the Moon,Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus. I had never been to this elevation so the sky I knew was 40 degrees to the north.

  The Kilauea Light house.

11/15The Big Island

11/15 Arrive Kona, nice outdoor airport, we chose to skip the rent a car for a week an pay $35/night for a condo at the Kona Islander Inn. It kind of bummed us out after 3 days in Polihale to be trapped in the hustle bustle of Kona's Ali'i drive.  We managed to catch a bus here and hitch a ride there for the beaches were miles away. We visited White Sands Disappearing Beach, and the next one south of there had excellent snorkling. But waaay crowded (small beaches). We went and took the timeshare tour for a free luau at King Kamehameha's. It was fun learing about cutting coconuts and the hula. The food was soso but the bar gave us lots of booze. After a week we were free!
