Saturday December 1st - Moab, UT
I left Grand Junction, CO early this morning and headed towards Moab. Partly sunny skies gave way to spectacular colors along the Colorado River. There were 200 ft. red cliffs and lots of red dirt. I was truely in awe. My inner self told me "You aint seen nothin yet". So I decided not to stop and take pictures. When I got to Moab the sun was gone and it was a balmy 38 degrees so I chose to drive through town and look around. I stopped in at the Arches Visitors Center for a slideshow and forecast. Increasing clouds and wind prompted me to try again some other time. I would like to go on a sunny day. So I set out for Salt Lake City. I drove all day in sleet and snow that didnt stick to the highway. When I came around Pt. of the Mountain there were very high winds, I had to fight to hold my lane. There is a venturi effect there. It was good to see Brian, Heather and dog Marley again. We spent most of the night chatting and went out for some dinner. Snowed overnight.

Sunday December 2nd - Snowbird, Utah
It snowed an extra 4 inches over night making for a great morning of snowboarding! There was plenty of powder and lots of terrain to cover. Snowbird had 2 chairs open, 1 high speed detachable quad, and a dual tram with a 125 person capacity in each car. I takes you 2,900 feet up to the summit. In the summer they hold paragliding competitions here that makes for some great cross country flights. We had a blast! Pow pow and more pow. Up top was windy with a few rocks getting uncovered but the rest was very nice. The ticket prices are comparable to Alyeska's. We had lunch at the mid mountain lodge. Its was nice with good food and microbrews on tap. By 4 o'clock we were totally bushed and ready to call it quits. "I'm gonna be sore tomorrow!" A fun time was had by all. After dinner it was lights out for some heavy Z's.

Utah Panorama
Monday December 3rd - Sandy, Utah
Brian and I went to the local Apple dealer to check out the new Powerbooks and iPod. We plugged in his DV camera and played with iMovie as well. Wow, hot stuff. Macs truly rule. If you haven't tried the new OS 10, I would recommend taking yourself a little trip to your local dealer or visiting Apple.com. After that we went up to Kevin's at Pt. of the Mountain (see november) to hang out and watch the new paragliding movies that Kevin was making on his new Sony Vaio using Adobe Premiere6. Pretty impressive for his first run at DV editing. The 3 of us plan on collaborating on new video projects in Nevada, Mexico and Alaska. We went out to lunch and picked up some supplies to fix my broken seat board in my harness. Some fiberglass and epoxy will do the trick. It'll be stronger than it ever was. We picked up Brian's wife Heather and returned to Kevin's house to have dinner with he and his wife Wendy. We had stacked enchiladas. A first for me. You take pancake size tortillas and layer them with taco goodies and continue the layering process. Yummy! Forecast is calling for more clouds and snow. Sunny Friday. Kevin and I (and possibly Brian) are planning on making a trip to the flying sites in Mexico in January. We will be driving his Suburban. Planning on a 7-9 day trip with around 4-7 people.

December 4th - 6th - Utah
Snow. Not much goin on this week. Spending time with friends. Playin in the snow. Waiting for some flyable weather.

Friday December 7th - Utah
I hung out at the academy waiting for the weather to become flyable. Kevin dropped in with a student. We watched a very informative kite handling video and went to lunch. It started to clear up so we went up to the north side. It was pretty strong out of the north. A lot of pilots got off to some great soaring with some ballast assist on launch. I waited a little too long for it to calm down. By the time I got off, I had missed the lift band and sank out with a couple other pilots. We got a ride back up. Afterwards Kevin invited me over to watch the brand new Super Fly Hard Paragliding video. It was pretty well done. It gets me excited about shooting video in Mexico.

Saturday December 8th - Draper, Utah
Sunny! With a smoothie to go I headed to the south side of Point of the Mountain and flew for 1 hr 15 min then landed to drain some ballast. I took of again for 3 hr 45 min. I was having too much fun to even think about lunch. I flew til sunset. Wow 5 hours of flying! What a day of ridge soaring with the birds over the beautiful snowy landscape on a sunny day. Lots of other paragliders and hang gliders were out. The news shot a story regarding FAA restrictions during the Olympics. There will not be any flying permitted then. Ill be in Cali by then. Check out the photo gallery.

Sunday December 9th - Sandy, Utah
Sunny. A day of rest from the long day yesterday. I helped Heather rake her yard and played with dog Marley. Spent the rest of the day working on Christmas project. Better hurry!

Monday - Friday December 10th - 14th
Not a whole lot of outdoor activities. Temps in the 20s. Teaching Brian how to use his new XP Gateway and his new Titanium G4 Powerbook. Truly a pleasure to work with the best of both platforms.

Saturday December 15th
Kevin and Wendy's Christmas diner. What a fun night. A huge delicious home cooked meal followed by hours of stories and laughs. Kevin and I went over the Mexico trip in detail on the map (see itinerary). We plan to leave around new years and be in Valle by the 5th by way of the west cost of the mainland. I see warm beaches in my future. Well fly in Valle until the 12th. I got a picture of all of us. From left to right there's me, Bobby, Wendy, Astro, Kevin, Brian and Heather.
December 16th - 17th - Sandy, Utah
Sunny! Brian, Heather, Marley, and I went into the canyon for some snowshoeing. It was fun getting exersise after a week of laziness. Time to start thinking about heading to Denver to meet up with my old friend Will Thompson from Anchorage. I plan to do some snowboarding/skiing there and spend a night or two. I watched a video of the flying site and surroundings in Valle de Bravo. It looks beautiful there. It sounds like its going to be extra boaty this year due to the warmth.
Tuesday December 18th - Utah to Denver
Sunny - I said my goodbye's and thank you's to Brian and Heather and hit the road to Denver. The drive along I-70 was beautiful. Red rocky cliffs layered with light snow and evergreens. There were two passes Vail and Loveland, each around 10,000 feet. It was white out conditions. You could only see the car in front of you. The average speed was about 45 mph until I got to the Denver side of the passes. I found my way to Will's apartment after a tour of downtown in rush hour. We went out to a cool Irish Pub downtown. Great food. We stayed up and caught up on old times. I took the couch and fell asleep to the purring of Will's cat Silko on my chest.

December 19th - 20th - Denver
Sunny, Cold. Mostly sat around with Silko watching DVD movies while Will worked. In the eve's we would go out to cool places with his friends. There was always plenty to talk about. We have a lot in common. I am really glad that I made the trip to Denver.

Friday December 21st - Vail, CO
Cloudy, some snow. After a 100 mile drive we arrived at Vail around 11am. Half day tix went on sale at noon for $47. We picked up some rental skiis for Will and rode the gondola to mid mountain then a high speed quad to the top. We spent a few runs together on the easy slopes to get warmed up. Will and I split up and I went into the more advanced back bowls in search of deeper powder. It was fun exploring a bigger mountain than I was used to. There was a second mountain called Blue Sky Summit that I explored and found what I was looking for off a trail called Cloud Nine. After 4 hours I was ready to call it quits and met up with Will back in Lionshead Village. I was impressed at the number of high speed detachable quads and friendliness of the employees. Overall it was loads of fun. Its no wonder that Vail is the number one ski resort for 2001. Afterwards it was Pizza and Beer at Baux Joes. Thanks to bigdaddy J. for ispiring me to bring my snowboard along on my roadtrip.

Saturday December 22nd - Denver - Cedaredge
Sunny - Time for the 300 mile drive back to Mom and Mike's for Christmas. The drive was similar to the one on the way out. Nice sunset view from atop the mesa on the way to Cedaredge.

December 23rd - 24th -  Grand Mesa
Sunny - Spending time with Mom and Mike. Planning on heading up to the Mesa to stay in a Cabin at Mesa Lakes Resort. We went to the local sporting goods store and rented some cross country skiis for me. We then drove up the mesa and checked in at Spruce Lodge. I got out in the snow for some sunny day fun. I found that I had to breathe a lot more at 10,000 feet. There was an extensive trail system for both skiiers and snowmachiners that weaved around several lakes. I treked out onto a lake. All the sudden my skiis got real heavy and sticky, I looked behind me and saw water! "Im outa here!" I said. After I scraped the ice off the bottom of my skiis I headed back for a shower and dinner.

December 25th - Merry Christmas!
Sunny - For Christmas I got Mexican money, a new shaver, new pants, shirts and socks. I now have too many clothes and must send some back home. Its nice spending time in the cabin instead of the motor home. We hung out and went to the lodge for lunch and a huge dinner. They had a fireplace and a tree with lots of decorations. Nice place. Friendly people. Photo of my mother, step-father and I, Jan and Mike.

Friday - December 28th - Cedaredge - Moab
Sunny - After spending the first half of the day with my mother, we said our goodbye's and I started out on the 260 mile drive to Moab. The drive was a repeat of the route I took leaving Cedaredge after Thanksgiving. This time it was sunny so I took over 100 photos. It was so cool. The combination of red rock, green shrubs and layers of snow made for some incredible scenery. I got to the top of Arches National Park with about 2 hours of daylight left. The low angle of the sun made for some excellent photos. It didnt take long to cover most of the sights by car. I watched the sunset through an arch called turret. It was then time to hit the Moab brewery for some dinner and brew. I sat at the bar, ordered a Scorpion pale ale and enjoyed the decor. The theme was totally Moab. Items hanging from the ceiling included a tent, kites, a mountain bike and a hang glider. After enjoying my garlic veggie pasta I picked the first motel I saw. It was called the Moab Valley Inn. An impressive hotel with sweet suites. I checked in and went for a hot tub and watch the movie "Heat" A great Deniro/Pecino movie. Deniro had actually stayed in the same hotel. I saw the autographed photo in the lobby.

December 29th - 30th - Las Vegas
Cloudy - Since there was no sun, I decided to skip going up to Slick Rock and head for Vegas. It was a very long scenic drive through the plains of southern Utah. It rained the last half until I got close to Las Vegas. I could see the sunset poking through the clouds. Then, about 30 miles out of Vegas, the sky turned a pink/orange that matched the color of the desert landscape. A very surreal looking picture. I went back in time as I crossed over to PST. Las Vegas came into view in all its glory. I was wowed as I drove to the city center. More like blown away. Lights and video screens everywhere. The streets were smooth and wide. Traffic moved along very well for rush hour. I scoped out where I will be meeting Kevin the next day for our Mexico trip then looked for a motel. I ended up at a super 8 just outside of Nellis AFB. I figure I'll save the tour of Vegas until I return from Mexico when I have met more people to go with. There will be several paragliders from Vegas on the Mexico trip. Wish me luck!
